Disability & Housing

Western Reserve is committed to providing safe housing for people of all abilities. Rather than people adapting to the home, we try to make the home adapt to the person. A person with special needs faces challenges everyday in a traditional home just getting in and out of the home, within the home, not to mention the difficulty of getting in and out of a bathtub.

Western Reserve has several programs to help people with special needs live more comfortably at home.
Universal design is based on the real world differences among people. The principle of universal design reduces barriers and hazards to promote independence, dignity, safety and caregiving in the home for people throughout their lives. Universal design homes look like all other homes and will accommodate people throughout their lifespan as their needs change. Western Reserve builds universal design homes that are highly accessible for all people.

Rehab and Repair Program
A home you bought 20 years ago may not necessarily meet your needs today. Whether you are 40 or 80, you still want to live in your home. Western Reserve has established a Rehab and Repair Program that will make it easier to do just that. For those meeting certain income guidelines, our rehab and repair program can make homes more accessible by installing ramps and showers. In addition the program can also be used for emergency repairs, such as plumbing and heating.

Services for Independent Living , a non-profit independent living center serving Cuyahoga, Lake, Geauga and Lake Counties provides services and advocacy for persons with disabilities.
